who we are
Welcome to Touching the Life of Girls Foundation International
Touching The Lives of Girls Foundation International is a non- governmental organization that believes that with the right education and support, the girl child has the potential to lift an entire family out of poverty and that a generation of educated girls has the power to change family, community, and society as a whole. We take a genuine approach on the ground to developing integrated solutions to the complex issues of gender equality and health. The Girl Child Project is an initiative of Touching the Lives of Girls Foundation (TGLF) designed to educate and enforce hygienic practices among adolescent females thereby reducing school absenteeism during menstrual cycles. The main objective of the project is to create awareness about female menstrual hygiene and provide free sanitary pads to beneficiaries. Women who are knowledgeable about menstrual hygiene and safe practices are less vulnerable to RTI and its consequences. Therefore, increased knowledge about menstruation right from childhood may help in safe practices and mitigating the suffering of millions of women. However, it is very unfortunate that most of the young girls are ignorant about menstruation before menarche in this study. The above observations might be due to poor literacy level of mothers or absence of proper health education program in school, which should focus on menstrual hygiene among girls. The recent sad story of girls being defiled by a man in Ghana is not only shameful, but depressing, heart-breaking, and criminal. Even more worrying, is the alleged clandestine attempts by prominent people in society such as the Chief of the area to obstruct justice for the victim based on the verdict of the community gods. Although rape and defilement cases have been with us in Ghana since time immemorial, the high rate at which the menace is occurring in recent times in different parts of the country is a real cause for concern. This is in view of the devastating and often damning consequences of defilement on the health of the girl child and society as a whole A cited infertility, trauma, the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, STDs, and terminal illness and even death as some of the negative effects of defilement There is a need for the education on the need to report rape and defilement cases to the security agencies, instead of accepting private settlement at home. This why TLGFI in partnership with Ghana Police Service has agreed sensitize the nation in curbing it. District Superintendent Police, Mrs. Afia Tenge who is a law enforcement officer will be the face fronting this project. The two year’s project is designed to expand the reach of the organization with a project scope of 1000,000 female students across primary, junior high and senior schools in various communities in Ghana. Implementation of the activities of the project will be undertaken by a team of experts within the organization and experts from partner Institution which is the Ghana Police Service; already in existence is quite a number of resource persons who can be relied on to execute the project. The project total cost is estimated at approximately Ghc 2,781,000.
